The vestibular system plays a role in balance (inner ear) and it also plays a crucial role in the child’s emotional and muscular development, as well as the development of vision, language and the ability to learn and concentrate.

Some vestibular activities are:
  • Walk legs crossing over a straight line, then heel to toe along the line
  • Bear walk - on hands and feet moving hand and foot together on same side
  • Monkey walk - on hands and feet moving opposite hand and foot together
  • Balance on one foot – for a long time with balancing arms
  • Do bunny/frog hops
  • Walk on tip toes
  • Balance up on bottom, arms and legs off the ground in a ‘v’ shape
  • Sing row, row, row your boat with a partner, then by yourself rocking side to side
  • Hang and swing upside down on the monkey bars, spin upside down
  • Set a challenge course focussing on balance activities
  • Pass a ball to a partner between your legs and over your head back to back
  • Crocodile – same sided i.e. arm and leg bent on same side as face, cross pattern i.e. arm bent on same side as face, leg straight on this side. Then change-change-change
  • Roll down a hill, arms straight overhead and the legs held straight. Do slowly!
