The necessary skills for comprehension and understanding of new material, to be able to correctly form letters, numbers and shapes, and for seeing differences in letters and words. It is the essential skill for reading, writing and working with numbers.

Some visual and auditory activities are:
  • Stick a sticker on thumb or pointer finger, keeping body and head still
  • Follow thumb with your eyes only – do slowly! Up and down / left and right
  • Hit balloons with a fly swat
  • Lift a feather up, drop it and it will slowly waft to the ground. The child can catch it.
  • Lazy 8 car racing board – child move car around track following arrows, eyes must follow car – change hands
  • Hold a plastic plate with two hands and roll a ping pong ball in circles one way then next
  • Hold a plastic or paper cup and use it to throw up and catch cotton wool 
  • Sing nursery rhymes
  • Play bingo type games
  • Play memory – have pictures on ground, you say ‘car – boat – cup’ , child repeats then stands on pictures on order
  • Catch bubbles on an ice block stick
