What is Literacy?

English is one of the eight learning areas specified in the New Zealand Curriculum document.  It is described as "The study, use and enjoyment of the English language and its literature, communicated orally, visually and in writing, for a range of purposes and audiences and in a  variety of text forms." (NZC p18)  Literacy in English gives students access to the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to be effective communicators.

Success in Literacy is fundamental to success across the curriculum, which is why it is given great priority by the Government with the introduction of National Standards. The Reading and Writing Standards address the overall purpose of reading and writing in learning.  At Parkland School Literacy is one of our our key learning areas alongside Numeracy.  In our classrooms you will see Literacy in a variety of forms; reading, writing, oral language and visual language.
